Jereed is a traditional Turkish outdoor team sport and involves scoring points by throwing a blunt wooden spear at the riders of the opposing team. Jereed came to Anatolia with the Turks when they emigrated from their homelands in Central Asia in 1071. It was widespread in the 16th century. In peacetime it was played to improve the cavalry's offensive and defensive capabilities and in campaigns to arouse enthusiasm for battle. Jereed gained its greatest popularity in the 19th century as a show sport and court game. As the game was not without danger and there were numerous casualties, the game was banned in 1826. It was then resumed in the provinces, but never regained the importance it had in earlier times.
Little is known about Tomas Hoelzel. He lived from 1788 to 1840 in Czechia. In 1833 he exhibited 12 large history paintings.
