Mary is depicted seated, her arms outstretched in a mournful gesture, her gaze directed upwards, superbly carved limewood, hollowed out on the back, minor traces of former paint, 85 x 104 cm, age-related damage, (MC)

The present sculpture is an exquisite work by Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder; the posture, face type and pleats are comparable with a series of Pietà sculptures by the master from around 1750. Compare: Helga Achleitner, Johann Peter Schwanthaler der Ältere, Ried 1991, pp. 114 – 119.
