Vienna Festival

As a long-standing partner the Dorotheum yearly sponsors the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival).

Since its founding in 1927, the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) have become a culturally significant event that attracts not only local but international artists and visitors to Vienna.

This year the Vienna Festival is themed “Freie Republik Wien” (Free Republic of Vienna) under the new artistic direction of Milo Rau. The opening promises to be an exceptional event where the “Free Republic of Vienna” will be proclaimed - an art republic for all!

This year’s theme “Resistance and Revolution” promises a captivating and inspiring program.

Milo Rau’s opera debut is a reinterpretation of Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” in which the benevolent attitude of the ruler is reduced to a mere strategy of self-assertion.

Rau works with 18 people living in Vienna, some of which have first-hand experience with repressive systems, to modernise the work. The opera asks the question “Can political art truly change the world, or does it rather solidify existing power structures?” The performances in Vienna on the 21st, 22nd, 24th and 25th of May are supported by Dorotheum. The opera premiered in February 2021 in the Grand Théâtre Genève.
