Albert Ritzberger came from a family of teachers and was himself at first a teacher. He exhibited his first drawings in an art gallery in Linz. The quality of his pastel portraits secured him a place at the Vienna school of arts and crafts in 1876/77 with Ferdinand Laufberger, and later at the Vienna Academy (1879 to1884) where he was taught by Heinrich von Angeli. Encouraged by receiving several awards, he established his own studio in Gumpendorf in 1884. From 1887 to 1890 he worked in his studio in Munich, relocating it to Salzburg in 1893. He travelled to Italy and Holland in 1893, and this was followed by visits to Vienna and Salzburg. From 1890 until his death he lived and worked partly in Linz and partly in Aschach an der Donau.
