Antependium,
Northern Hungary (Europe), c. 97 x 225 cm, second half of the 17th century, silk embroidery with faux satin stitch and stem stitch on linen base, at the centre the Madonna and child surrounded by so-called Italian vase patterns with handled vases on a plinth, long necks and bouquets of flowers, the present embroidery features almost all types of flower characteristic of 17th-century Hungarian embroidery – a very similar piece was published by Maria Varju-Ember, on the reverse entirely mounted on linen with frame, left side damaged, some signs of wear and stains in the pattern, creased.
