Ninghsia dragon carpet, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

West China, c. 358 x 281 cm, 19th century, whilst in Western mythology dragons symbolise monsters, their East-Asian counterparts are exclusively associated with positive qualities, such as spring, water and rain, good fortune, fertility and imperial power, here as “nine imperial animals playing in the sea” with five claws on a rare red background, in good condition in keeping with its age, only slight signs of wear, fringe damage.
