Mixed lot (7 items): Yemen: Seven Yemeni ornaments, all made of silver and quality silver alloy.
1: A large, round amulet container made of silver, worn by women on a chain around the neck. The silver cylinder and the hemispherical ends are densely decorated with granulated silver spheres and silver wire: the cylinder with two rhomb shapes, the hemispherical ends with segments. The protective amulet can be opened on one side. Formerly, it contained either a handwritten Koranic surah or a ‘magical square’ on paper for the protection of the person who wore it. L: 15 cm; diameter: 4.5 cm.
2: A semicircular silver box, worn by Yemeni men on their curved dagger belt. The lid is in the upper section, with a buckle. The front and sides are richly decorated with silver wire, silver bands and granulated silver spheres. The reverse is plain with belt loops (one loop broken). H: 7.2 cm; W: 8.2 cm; 2.4 cm deep.
3: A smaller kohl container made of silver. For the storage of kohl, a black antimony paste used by Yemeni women and men alike as make-up for their eyelids. The silver container in the shape of a small vase has a silver plug-in top, and a silver make-up stick hanging on a chain. In a holder with two eyelets on the side of the container. H: 6.4 cm.
4: A bangle made of quality silver alloy. Decorated on the outside with soldered round plates, knop bands and twisted silver wire. Executed in two halves, with hinge and buckle. H: 5.2 cm, DM: 5.4 cm.
5: Three rings, partly made of pure silver, partly of silver alloy. Two of them are covered in red coral pearls, one ring features a silver coin dated 1930 (anno hegirae 1349).
All seven objects show good traces of usage: First third of the 20th century. (ME)
