Supported by Fürst Metternich himself, in 1816 he took part on an expedition to Brazil. On his return he was appointed court painter to Archduke Johann, and, in 1836, Professor of landscape painting at the Academy where he was active until his retirement in 1852. Working with great topgraphical precision, his comprehensive oeuvre is of huge artistic and historical importance.
