porcelain, body with iron-red and gilt-painted court dragon with symbols of luck in an eternal knot with pearls, coins, scrolls and a leaf of artemisia, the 8 precious Chinese things, with phoenixes, Ø 23.3 cm, Meissen, overglaze blue sword mark circa 1730, turner mark X George Kittel the Elder, Pirna 1671–24.8.1748 Meissen, from 1708 working in Dresden for Böttger, model by Gottlieb Kirchner, painting by the Höroldt workshops (Ru)

Lit.: Porzellan Sammlung Dresden, Führer durch die ständige Ausstellung, p. 166, ill. The Meissen table service with the ‘red dragon’ was produced for the Saxon court of August I between 1729 and 1735. It was very much influenced by Oriental design. The model for the service was a Japanese plate with Kakiemon painting from the Royal Collection. This décor, also later termed the ‘Red Court Dragon’, was reserved exclusively for the porcelain of the Saxon court until 1918.

Porcelain with the overglaze blue sword mark was produced for the Parisian porcelain dealer, Rodolphe Lemaire between 1729 and 1731.
