Yaure, Ivory Coast: A mask with bird’s head crest.

Yaure, Ivory Coast: A mask with bird’s head crest. - Tribal Art

The Yaure are regarded as a subgroup of the Baule people in Ivory Coast. Their artistic style, too, displays many similarities with the Baule. Despite this, the Yaure have developed their own recognisable stylistic features, which do not occur among the Baule: for example, the prominent jagged border of the present mask, or high crests, such as the large, stylised head of a Calao bird (a hornbill) in this case, the small, ‘smiling’ mouth. The present Yaure mask is carved in light wood, the face and crest are dyed black. This finely manufactured piece (see the hairstyle lines, the spikes and the beard) must be considerably old, as the signs of wear to all the edges on both front and back suggest. With very good usage patina, especially on the inside, where a ‘bite bar’ provides a hold for the dancer. Colour scuffed on the front due to age. Small pieces broken off on the back rim. First third of the 20th century; H: 32 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian collection.
