Guro, Ivory Coast: A heddle pulley with elephant head.
A heddle pulley of the Guro people, made of hard wood, of dark brown colour. With a charming, perfect and finely carved elephant head. With remains of white colouring in the large elephant ears (by means of kaolin). With visibly good usage patina (also on the inside, where the heddle operated). The heddle and its axis are missing. A minor, old crack to the ‘trunk’ of the elephant (glued). First half of the 20th century; H: 16 cm. (ME)
