Trained as a landscape and genre painter, Wolfgang Adam Töpffer began his artistic career as a typographer and engraver in Lausanne. He later worked in Paris where he increasingly dedicated himself to watercolours. He was awarded the Golden Medal at the Paris Salon of 1812 for his artistic achievements.
