Lot No. 118

Johann Kautský

Johann Kautský - 19th Century Paintings

(Prague 1827–1896 Vienna)
Wetland Landscape with Stork, signed, dated I. Kautsky 1852, oil on canvas, 121 x 142 cm, framed, (Rei)

We are grateful to Dr. Michal Simek for his assistance in cataloguing this work.

Even after moving from the Prague Academy to Dusseldorf, where he studied with J. W. Schirmer from 1850 onwards, Johann Kautský did not stop exhibiting at the Bohemia’s art society‘s annual exhibitions. Sadly, the descriptions of the paintings in the catalogues and contemporary reviews do not allow us to definitely identify the majority of the works known today as those shown at these exhibitions. For the present lot, it is only possible to say that it is very probable that, due to its monumental scale, the painting was exhibited at the anniversary exhibition of 1852 or 1853. With every newly discovered work, Kautský’s oeuvre is appears increasingly closer in style to the works of Haushofer’s pupils, amongst whom this, until recently, rare painter is becoming increasingly important. His monumental scenes are proving to be exceptionally good examples of Bohemian landscape painting.
