Hispano-Flemish School, around 1600

Hispano-Flemish School, around 1600 - Old Master Paintings

The penitent Mary Magdalene,
oil on panel, 93.5 x 63 cm, framed

Despite the picture’s high quality, no convincing attribution has hitherto been proposed. Infrared photographs have clearly revealed the underdrawing of the present painting. The emotionally dense expressiveness of this work has led some scholars to believe that it could have been commissioned by a Spanish client and possibly produced by a Netherlandish artist working in Spain. Its drastic naturalism along with an idealised, abstract expression of the face place the present painting in the tradition developed by such artists as Rogier van der Weyden. The coarsely woven penitential costume indicates a Spanish client, whilst the face, mouth and hair are executed in a fashion characteristic of the late Antwerp mannerism. Since the artistic centres of Antwerp and Valladolid were linked by a lively exchange at that time, a precise stylistic classification of this picture is hard to suggest.
