Matteo Ingoli

Matteo Ingoli - Old Master Paintings

(Ravenna 1585 or 1587-1631 Venice)
The Annunciation to the Virgin,
oil on canvas, 128 x 96 cm, unframed

We are grateful to Mauro Lucco, who examined the painting in the original to confirm its authenticity. The present painting is a characteristic work of the lesser-known artist Matteo Ingoli and was dated to around 1630 by Mauro Lucco. The Ravenna-born Ingoli moved to Venice early, where he first began his career under the aegis of Palma il Giovane. All his works known today date back to the final period of his production, and for this reason it is not possibile to detect a chronological development in his oeuvre. A typical feature of his work is his treatment of drapery folds, which are broken into geometric patterns on the floor. Characteristic are also his physiognomies and coiffures of the angels with their “Veronese” locks. These stylistic elements can also be found in Ingoli’s only documented painting, The Calm during the Flight to Egypt, (Museo Civico, Treviso). Also the colour palette with the glowing yellow, red and blue tones is typical of the artist.
