Frans Francken II

[Saleroom Notice]
Frans Francken II - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1581–1642)
The Creation of Eve,
oil on panel, 53 x 85 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium

The present painting is accompanied by a written certificate issued by Ursula Härting (in photocopy, February 2010).

Härting mentions three artists who collaborated in this painting. Frans Francken II painted the figures of God, the Father, Adam and Eve and the background scene of the Temptation of Eve. The landscape has been executed by an anonymous collaborator of Abraham Govaerts. Most of the animals seem to have been added later by an artist in the workshop of Jacob Bouttats I (active from 1660- c. 1700). A second version of this compostion with fewer animals is in a Spanish private collection.

Saleroom Notice:

Klaus Ertz has suggested an attribution to Adriaen van Stalbemt for the present painting. He will include it in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné as an autograph work by Stalbemt.
