Provenance: Belgian private collection. Pieter van Maes is a rare Dutch landscapist who until a few years ago had only been known for his winter landscapes. Walter Bernt about the latter works: "They feature a special idiom: excessively elevated architectural structures – mostly fortified town walls, with tall brick buildings and windmills in the background – as well as important and large-sized figures. The sky is animated by clustered clouds, ranging from white to dark…"
