Lot No. 1190

Adolf Hiremy Hirschl

Adolf Hiremy Hirschl - 19th Century Paintings

(Timişoara 1860–1933 Rome)
The artist’s wife in a park, oil on canvas, 87 x 121 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.

The present lot captures the artist’s wife Isa Ruston, the daughter of an English entrepreneur. Hirschl married her in 1898 in a Protestant church on the North Sea island of Helgoland. Her previous marriage to the Viennese merchant Schön ended in divorce because of her relationship with Hirschl, which was a great scandal at the time. The couple moved to Rome at the end of the 1890s where the artist settled for the next 35 years. Hirschl completed several oils of this subject. Another version represents the portrait of his wife on a rock above the sea, a nostalgic subject as the present lot. It shows a woman sitting on a garden seat in a park, probably the Villa Borghese in Rome. She is shown with a sense of tranquillity and serenity.
