glass, colourless, cup with cambered sides, front featuring cut medallion with male bust, marked all-round EN MARS SAXONICUS, reverse side featuring medallion with dedication HIC FAUSTE PRIMUS IN HOSTES IRRUIT CONF: MANU VIENNA LIBERATA D 12/2 SEPT: 1683, both medallions framed by laurel leaves with bow, shaft with nodus and red thread inlay, smooth base with pontil mark, height 15.5 cm Saxony 1683 (Ru)

This Baroque goblet shows an allegory of MARS SAXONIA, the Saxon god of war, ALSO DEN SÄCHSISCHEN SOLDATEN refers to the 8000 Saxon soldiers who fought at the relief battle on 12 September 1683 under King Jan Sobjeski and who according to the inscription were the first to happily charge at the Turks, HIC FAUSTE PRIMIS INHOSTES IRRIUT, and therefore were instrumental in helping to liberate Vienna VIENNA LIBERATA.
