Jan Pieter van Bredael the Younger

Jan Pieter van Bredael the Younger - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1683–1735 Vienna)
A robbers’ encampment;
An ambush in the wood,
oil on panel, each 26.7 x 36.8 cm, framed (2)

Both paintings address the more dangerous aspect of travelling and depict an occurrence from everyday life in the early 18th century: an ambush by robbers and their encampment. Robbers have set up camp in a peaceful landscape, heavily wooded with open views to the surrounding landscape, an image which shows that Bredael was indebted to the great Antwerp traditions. An apparently idyllic scene that does not, however, belie the fact that the next ambush is about to occur. Bredael shows himself to be a master of his trade with his narrative representational style. His employer, Prince Eugen of the Savoye had many works by him including subtle landscapes and many dramatic battle and hunting scenes, some of which are to be found in the museums in Vienna.
