Lot No. 286

Michel Hubert Descours

(Bernay 1707–1775) Portrait of a young lady with a basket of flowers, oil on canvas, 79 x 61 cm, framed,

We are grateful to M. Stéphane Pinta, Cabinet Turquin, Paris, for pointing us in the direction of Descours (e-mail to the consignor). This portrait which bears testimony to the elegance of Louis XV of France was painted by Michel Descours, one of the few French portraitists who achieved national importance even though they did not settle in Paris. During his entire career as a portrait painter Descours lived in the small town of Bernay and yet is one of the best French portraitist of the middle of the 18th century. Highly praised by his teacher, Hyacinthe Rigaud, in whose workshop he was active from 1731 to 1745, Descours received commissions from all over Europe. For this reason there are portraits by him in Dresden and Potsdam. In this portrait Descours combines the traditional Baroque formula for portraits, a representative portrait painted in the language of the rural genre portrait, with an altogether more cheerful conception, which accorded with the character of the laste Rococo.
