Lot No. 181

Lorenz Strauch

(Nuremberg 1554 – 1630) Portrait of a gentleman in a black doublet with a lace collar, holding a sword in his left hand, signed and dated upper right “LS (ligated) 1583” and inscribed “AETATIS SUAE.19. AN.”, oil on panel, 40 x 34.5 cm, framed, (Wo)

This portrait is one of the earliest known works by the artist. Lorenz Strauch was a painter of architectural pictures and portraits. He painted on glass and was an engraver Glasmaler. He was exceptionally precise in the draughtsmanship of his portraits and of costume in general. As a landscape painter he employed the same rigour in his representations of topographically accurate vedute, such as, for instance, in his views of the main square in Nuremberg, of the city of Innsbruck and the Chapel Royal in Innsbruck.
