A SIDE-BY-SIDE LANCASTER SHOTGUN, JAN NOVOTNÝ, PRAGUE, 1880’s


serial number 8688 (barrel bed, handguard etc.), barrels with smooth bore, cylindrical, Damascus, folding (the crown handle), marked (in gold): J. Nowotný – in Prag, the barrel bed is marked: NOWOTNÝ V PRAZE, the handguard is marked: NOWOTNY / PATENT, the barrels are marked at the bottom: K 16399 (?), the barrel bed and the ensemble are decorated with engraved ornaments and hunting motifs, a lower loop is missing, bore 17 mm, length 109 cm (Do)
The gun has been disarmed by plugging the chambers and firing pins, a 7mm circular hole drilled in the lower part of the barrels. This disarming originates from the period when the limit for historical weapons was established in 1870, currently there is not need for this disarmament.
Jan Novotný (1839-1893), a company in Prague since 1865, after his death the company was run by his widow Marie (until 1904) and son Antonín (1871-1938). The most important Czech gunsmith company after Lebeda's demise.
