Anton Einsle - Imperial Court Memorabilia and Historical Objects

(Vienna 1801-1871) - Emperor Francis Joseph I, of Austria, portrait of the young emperor in field marshal’s uniform with medals, 158 x 115 cm, oil on canvas, signed and dated "Ant. Einsle (1)849", framed, verso old collection seal of Archduke Ludwig Viktor, (Lu)

A superb three-quarter portrait of the young emperor shortly after his accession to the throne. Anton Einsle studied at the Viennese Academy and received his first prize at the young age of 16. He soon became a much sought-after portrait painter of both the higher nobility and public figures. In 1838 he was appointed a court painter to the Austrian imperial family, and worked in a large studio at the Imperial Palace. In his role as official portrait painter of the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph I, Anton Einsle portrayed the young monarch approximately thirty times in the first two years of his reign alone.
