“My great longing was Paris, and in the spring of 1943 I was miraculously allowed to study there” …

“My teacher André Lhote was strict, but very good. We argued a lot, everyone had to paint his way, but I couldn’t and wouldn’t. Later, he came to see that I had my own way of doing it. I saw many very good exhibitions in Paris. There was Matisse and his large, magnificent still lifes, and Braque who I loved. An exhibition with the title “Flowers and Fruits” still looms large in my memory. The paintings were by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse, Bernard, Bonnard and others. These images provided me huge amounts of inspiration for my own work. Suddenly I understood French painting. I think Paris, in particular Montparnasse, is a paradise for any painter.”
