The present drawing may be a study for the large format painting by Palma il Giovane in the Chiesa dei Gesuiti in Venice which is dated by Stefania Mason ca. 1620–1625 (cf. S. Mason, Palma il Giovane, L’opera completa, Mailand 1984, Cat. No 426, p. 126, Fig. 723, p. 452). A comparable preliminary drawing for the painting in Venice was sold at Sotheby’s New York, 8th January 1991.
