An important Leopoldine 15 pound handle weight from 1704 - The Dr. Eiselmayr scales & weights collection

Vienna 1704, cast bronze, engraved and chased, remnants of gilding, stamped with the Austrian shield, the year (1)704 and the weight 15. The cylindrical weight rounded at the top with engraved double eagle with imperial crown, breastplate with cross and archducal hat, its claws holding a sword, sceptre and imperial orb; all-round inscription referring to Leopold's son, later Emperor Charles VI in connection with the War of the Spanish Succession: “fIrMato hVIC saXo annVs est, qVI fVIt CaroLI regIs CathoLICI frVstra / VIgILante GaLLo In HIspanIas penetrantIs. / fInIto hVIC aerI annVs est qVo AVgVstVs PortVgaLLIae ReX sVo portVI apprpInqVantI AVgVsto / HIspanIarVM RegI CaroLo praeVIa aggratVLatione occVrrIt.” The year of this weight marks the time when Charles, the Catholic king, invaded the Spanish lands, against which the Gaul stood guard in vain (chronogram=1704). The ore weight was completed in the year in which the King of Portugal rushed in gratitude to meet the Emperor and King of the Spanish lands, Charles, as he approached his port. (chronogram=1704). Total height 19.5 cm, diameter at bottom c. 11.4 cm.
