Strong demand for Russian and Eastern European artwork at Dorotheum’s 19th century paintings auction on April 25, 2018

Russian and Eastern European 19th century painters were barely known in the Western art market until a few decades ago, leaving their works feeling fresh and in high interest. In the 19th century paintings auction on April 25, 2018, many collectors honored their highly academic and emotional quality. For example, the portrait of a woman "Delicate creature" by the Russian master of portrait and genre painting, Constantin Jegorovich Makowsky, changed hands for 247,000 euros.

There were also large increases in the bids for works by Franz Roubaud, Jacob Schikaneder, Julius Sergius Klever and for an antiquated workshop portrait by Henryk Siemiradzki.
