12th May 2015: Art nouveau and applied art of the 20th century at Dorotheum

Objects from the golden age of Viennese art nouveau as well as French and German applied art will be presented at the upcoming Vienna Dorotheum on 12th May 2015.

The most valuable lot comes from Josef Hoffmann, an extensive 168-part silver cutlery set designed in 1922/25 together with Julius Zimpel and made by “Wiener Werkstätte” which is estimated at 100,000 to 150,000 Euro. The design drawings for this set are in the collection of the Museum of Applied Art, Vienna.

Likewise of silver, a large 8-part tea- and coffee service was designed in October 1918 by Otto Prutscher (€ 30,000 Gustav Gurschner (Mühldorf 1873-1970 Wien), Große Figur "Sklavin", Wien 1920er Jahre, Holz geschnitzt, türkis blaugrün gefasst, Höhe 126 cm Schätzwert € 25.000 - 35.000

A large and unusual carved wood figure, the “Slave” by Gustav Gurschner, once decorated the courtyard of his studio in Vienna, is valued at 25,000 to 35,000 Euro, while the blotter designed in 1903 by Kolo Moser for his future mother-in-law, is estimated at 10,000 to 15,000 Euro.

French furniture design is represented by Louis Majorelle and a rare sideboard from the period around 1910. The fine marquetry shows a quail and rabbit in a landscape with chestnut vines: the gilt bronze fittings are designed in the form of duck heads and serpents (€ 14,000 - 18,000). A silver-plated brass vase by Camille Fauré from the period of ca. 1925 is expected to fetch at least 8,000 to 12,000 Euro.

Friedrich Adler’s colourless glass vase with gilt pewter mount - decorated with silver-yellow threading and applied orange décor - confirms this artist as one of the most important proponents of German art nouveau (€ 2.200 - 3,000). The bronze figure of „Salome“, designed in 1905 by Rudolf Marcuse and valued at 9,000 to 12,000 Euro, was exhibited in 2012, at the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin. Finally, the auction features an impressive fin de siècle vase by Zsolnay, decorated with a Chinese dragon and dating to ca. 1900 (€ 10,000 - 15,000).
