Top prices and a world record for travel paintings at the 19th Century Paintings auction

Significant interest from international bidders as well as hammer prices far above estimates characterized the “Oil paintings of the 19th Century” auction on 21st April 2016 at Dorotheum in Vienna.

The subjects of the successful paintings also conveyed an international flair, evoking as they did such a desire for travel. Venetian vedute were the most popular genre of the auction: Ippolito Caffi’s painting of nocturnal festivities in Venice surpassed expectations, selling to calls of “Bravo!” in the auction hall for €161,000.

Pietro Galter’s atmospheric “At the entrance of the Grand Canal in Venice“ reached an outstanding €112,500, a world record for the artist. A further highlight of the auction was the view of Reims Cathedral by Domenico Quaglio, which saw a top result for the artist of €131,100.

This was altogether one of Dorotheum‘s most successful 19th century auctions.
