The present painting by Jan van Balen is based on a joint work dated from 1626 by Jan Brueghel II and Hendrick van Balen (formerly Galerie Frye & Sohn, Münster; see B. Werche, Hendrick van Balen – Ein Antwerpener Kabinettbildmaler der Rubenszeit, Turnhout 2004, vol. I, p. 153, no. A50, ill. vol. II, p. 348, and K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Jüngere, Freren 1984, pp. 310/11, no. 141). In this latter painting, Brueghel conceived the landscape, whereas the figures and the still-life elements are by the hand of Hendrick van Balen.
