Two dessert plates for the Marquis de Durfort,
pate tendre porcelain, 2 items, the bodies with gilt edging, decor “Sable d’Or”, gilt, green and blue painted large bell flowers, laurel wreath with red fruit and polychrome garlands of flowers, the centre with 4 purple painted shells heightened with gilt, blue blossoms and leaves, Ø 25 cm, Sévres, France, underglaze blue mark with year mark ca. 1766, painter Charles-Louis Méreaud Jeune, (1735–1780), painter of bouquets and garlands at Sévres 1657–1779 (Ru)
Lit.: L. Danckert, Handbuch des Europäischen Porzellans, p 533;
Emeric Joseph Jacques Civrac, Marquis de Durfort, (b. 19.3.1716, d. 8.4.1787), on 3.2.1767, he was appointed ambassador to Vienna, to the court of Maria Theresia and Joseph II. during the reign of Louis XV. In December 1766, Marquis de Durfort received this extensive service. It is conceivable that Marie Antointette may have dined from a plate of the same service. On 16.5.1770 she married Louis XVI., in May of that year (1770) Durfort returned to France. The above porcelain items are part of this service, which until recently was considered lost, with the exception of a single plate at the Bowes Museum in Yorkshire.
