An attribution to Pacecco de Rosa has been suggested by Vincenzo Pacelli. He compares the model of this painting with one of the mothers in the Massacre of the Innocents in Paris, Church of Santa Margherita (see: V. Pacelli, Giovan Francesco de Rosa detto Pacecco, Napoli 2008, pp. 314–315, n. 46).
We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada for suggesting an attribution to Diana de Rosa (Naples 1602-1643) for the present painting.
