African 'iron money', Bambara, Mali: a very rare form of a valuable objects of iron ('primitive money'). Probably of the Bambara (or Bamana) in Mali.
Africa has known many different forms of pre-monetary currency made of iron, copper or bronze (also called ‘primitive money’). The present one is entirely forged in iron. A long thin four-edged stem, tapering at the lower tip and bearing on top two large and wide leaf-shaped tips standing parallel to each other. In between these, at the base, two thin curly projections spring out to both sides. A very rare type of iron money, with a visibly old usage patina, possibly stemming from the Bambara (or Bamana) in Mali. Height: 110.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
