Maasai, Kenya, Tanzania: a Maasai women’s skirt made from dyed leather and embroidered with colourful glass pearls. - Tribal Art - Africa

Wrap-over women’s shirt of the Maasai, nilo-hamitic cattle breeders of the East African steppes (Kenya, Tanzania). The skirt is made of thin leather dyed dark brown with a concoction of ochre and fat. Its ‘cut’ is straight at the top and further below designed with three outwardly retracted spikes. The outer side of the leather skirt is carefully embellished with traditional decorative patterns – four glass plates (red, white and yellow). Delicate long lines, zigzags and borders at the brim made of small colourful glass pearls complete the embellishment. An old original repair in the middle (a hole patched underneath with leather) and only minimal damage (in the form of small holes). An old but perfectly well kept piece. Dimensions: length: 105 cm; width: c. 120 cm (above), c. 50 cm (below). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
