Ethiopia: A hand-held brass crucifix and a silver pendant cross for a necklace.
Every priest or monk of the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship carries with them a hand-held crucifix made of wood, iron, copper, brass, or silver. And every believer must — as decreed by a 15th century king — wear a cross at the neck. 1: The present hand-held crucifix is made in the Gondar style of northern Ethiopia. Made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) and executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. Tripartite assemblage with soldering. Decoration: hallmarking, small circle- and wave-line motifs. Where the hand clasps the crucifix — in the middle of the angular shaft — the metal is worn out due to protracted use. H: 34.5 cm, W: 15 cm. 2: A small neck cross cast in two sections. The smaller upper section with the eyelet connects to the lower cross with hinges. This is a cross with nubs from the central Ethiopian highlands. H: 6 cm, W: 3.5 cm. No notable damage on either object. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
