Lotto No. 64

Fali, northern Cameroon: A fertility doll of the Fali, richly decorated with glass bead necklaces and cowrie shells.

Fali, northern Cameroon: A fertility doll of the Fali, richly decorated with glass bead necklaces and cowrie shells. - Tribal Art

The Fali, neighbours of the Namji in the Mandara mountains in northern Cameroon, have very similar dolls as the Namji. With similar usage (gift of the bridegroom to the bride). For a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 63. The Fali dolls, however, have a few significant differences from the Namji dolls. The Fali carve their dolls in lightweight, light-coloured wood. The head is a simple, blunt cone, with a hairstyle of twisted laces and red, blue and yellow glass beads, affixed by means of coins. The long neck is densely wrapped with red glass bead necklaces. The body of the Fali doll is a round, long cylinder. It is smooth, only engraved below with lines in lozenge shape. Without arms and legs. The arms, as the legs, are indicated by bundles of pierced cowrie shells. These shells were affixed with old colonial coins and laces with blue glass beads. And the body of the doll was lavishly draped with many bundled chains of small, red, yellow and blue glass beads. The present Fali doll is a typical, ‘classical’ example of the type. With good traces of use. No special damage (one thread is torn on the back). H: 22 cm. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)

Provenance: According to the information of the consignor, acquired in 1975 ‘in situ’ in the Mandara mountains of northern Cameroon. Since then: Austrian Private Collection.
