Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A mask of the ‘Deangle’ type, with slit eyes and a coiffure of plant fibres.

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A mask of the ‘Deangle’ type, with slit eyes and a coiffure of plant fibres. - Tribal Art

The mask type ‘Deangle’ guides the young initiates of the Dan during their time in the bush camp, where in isolation they are instructed about the traditions of the tribe. 'Deangle', in mask with full body costume and raffia skirt, provides the youth with food, leads them into the village for visits, etc. The present, typical ‘Deangle’ mask is carved out of hard wood and dyed black. It shows the characteristic features of this type: a bulging, high forehead, slit eyes, small nose and a protruding, open mouth with inserted teeth (probably from an animal). Along the pointed chin are holes to which a beard of plant fibres was originally attached. The mask displays a carefully plaited hairstyle of dark brown coloured plant fibres. Overall an old piece with good usage patina on the front and back (on the inside). No damage. H: c. 34 cm (with coiffure). First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Eberhard Fischer & Hans Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, fig. 1, 4, 13, 14, 32, 36, 80-87.
