Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A mask of the ‘Deangle’ type, with slit eyes.

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A mask of the ‘Deangle’ type, with slit eyes. - Tribal Art

Amongst the Dan, this mask type ‘Deangle’ is worn by the man who guides the young initiates, who are taught about the traditions of the tribe in a remote bush camp (see also cat. no. 28). The present ‘Deangle mask’ is carved in hard, brown wood and its pointed oval face is dyed black. It displays the classical style of this mask type: a high bulging forehead, with an inset ‘energy giving’ iron hook at the top. The eyes are narrow slits and outlined. With small nose and an emphasised, protruding, open mouth and inserted teeth (of porcupine bristles or similar). The entire face is bordered with lines (scarification marks). Above on the crown of the head, and on the mouth, traces of earlier offerings are visible. This Dan mask shows a very good, old, shiny usage patina on the front and especially on the back (on the inside). Two small pieces broken off on the back rim. Otherwise no damage. H: 23.5 cm, W: 15 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian Collection.

Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Eberhard Fischer & Hans Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum Zurich, fig. 33, 34.
