Michele Ragolia - Dipinti antichi

(Palermo circa 1625–1686 Naples)
The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist
oil on canvas, 159 x 132.5 cm, framed

Exhibited:
Bomerano, Chiesa di San Matteo Apostolo, Recuperi e restauri in Agerola, July-October 1990

Literature:
I. Maietta, Michele Ragolia, un pittore ritrovato, in: Recuperi e restauri ad Agerola, ed. by I. Maietta, exhibition catalogue, Bomerano 1990, pp. 37-39, ill.

We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the attribution after examining the present painting in the original.

This painting was probably executed around 1666. In that year the artist signed his important cycle in the church of Sant’Antonio a Polla in Vallo di Diano, representing Old and New Testament episodes, which bear many similarities to the present canvas.

Michele Ragolia was born around 1625 in Palermo, but he soon left Sicily and arrived in Naples, where he became a pupil of Belisario Corenzio. In Naples he was influenced by the works of Massimo Stanzione, as can be seen in the treatment of the flesh tones and the clothes in the present painting.
