Lotto No. 22

Vízner František (Praha 1936 – 2011 Brno)

Vase with Four Holes
topaz glass, surface cut and polished with acid, prismatic shape with four drilled holes, sign. and dat. Vízner 93, 26 x 9 x 9 cm

František Vízner is one of the most important Czech glassmakers of the 2nd half of the 20th century. After studying at the AAAD in Prague (prof. Štipl, Plátek and Bauch), Vízner focused on designing moulded glass in a newly created art center within the company in Škrdlovice, where he made around 250 of his own designs of glass, moulded and processed in the glassworks, between 1967 and 1977. Many of these creations became icons of postwar glass design. In 1977, Vízner built his own glassworks workshop in Ždár nad Sázavou. He no longer worked in industrial production and focused on working in his studio. Objects cut into simple shapes, which reveal the beauty of a perfect form, glass and craftsmanship are characteristic for his work. There is not much variation in the shape of the objects, the author sought the optimal proportion of object and color in the glass used. The author chose a matte surface on purpose, since it diffuses reflection and shine and thus clearly defines the volume of the work. František Vízner has made one piece of this work. The individual bowls and vases differ in terms of color and size.

In 1996, the author began his collaboration with the Moser Glassworks. The choice of this glassworks was logical for him - he was looking for glassworks that would fulfill his requirements for the highest quality glass and the best craftsmanship. He designed several bowls and vases for this glassworks. For this auction, we have selected two vases, Linea and Eclipse, and the Peak bowl, which is a variation of his most famous Bowl with Tip from the 1970s. The Vase with Four Holes on offer is from his studio and shows how he can achieve an elegant, timeless object from a simple, prismatic shape.

Quotation:
I like several of my shapes, on which you can’t move the matter and color even one millimeter. Perfection for me means knowledge and acceptance of personal limitations. Not wanting to spread out unlimited wishes over a wide space. I wanted to be kindly limited by the material, the tools and my own hand. Solitude and concentration leads me on the path to perfection.
