A ceremonial ‘Sarong’ (wrap-around skirt for women, called a ‘lau hada’) made of hand-woven cotton, sewn into a long ‘tube’ and dyed black. With mythical animal motif, embroidered with small, white nassa shells and polychrome glass beads. Fringes around the edges, which are partly adorned with brass tubes. An interesting, old textile piece.
First half of the 20th century, dimensions: 168 cm x 70 cm. (ME)
