Southern Philippines, Sulu archipelago: A very old grave figure of the Bajau.
A highly abstracted figure made of light-coloured, hard wood. A grave guardian. With arms held close to the body. This grave figure stems from the Bajau. These people live on islands in the Sulu archipelago, in the southern Philippines. The figure probably comes from Sibutu island or the island of Sitankai.
The lower part of such grave sculptures is buried in the sand, therefore the object is heavily weathered at the bottom. With very old patina, and some pieces broken off due to age, erosion and cracks (on the head, left arm and rear).
18th/19th century or older. H: 56 cm. (ME)
