In his day, Jacob de Wit was one of Amsterdam’s most famous artists, particularly renowned for his wall- and ceiling decorations for the residences of wealthy patricians. He specialised in en grisaille, trompe l’œil-like painted decoration, which allowed him skilfully to imitate stone reliefs. A preliminary drawing for the painting at hand, with a slightly different composition, is at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum at Nürnberg.
