A halo
Nepal, c. 15th century.
Fire-gilt, embossed copper sheet. The halo in the shape of a horseshoe meant for framing the figure of a Buddhist saint. Decorated with tendrils growing out of two vases in the external bow surrounded by flames, the depiction of 14 Buddha figures and Vajrapani. In the inner bow on both sides an elephant, Padmapani, a leogryph with rider, a makara and at the zenith Garuda flanked by two apsaras. Minor deformations to the rim. H: 20 cm. (BA)
