Friedrich Gauermann’s painting is inextricably linked to the history of Austrian art during the 19th century, and he is regarded as one of the most significant and admired landscape and animal painters of his time. He soon populated his initially autonomous landscapes with animals and human figures. Traditional Dutch painting served as his model, and influenced him throughout his career. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he was not drawn to the South. Rather, he found inspiration for his motifs in the Alps. His representations of nature are highly picturesque and atmospheric. The well-balanced effects of light and ambience shape his images, in which humans, animals and nature coexist in harmony. Populating the woodland and mountain landscapes with animals is characteristic of his oeuvre, and he created varied compositions using the same themes.
