Baluch Bag Face,
Northeast Persia (Iran), c. 80 x 84 cm (incl. kilim), about 1860, very early knotted bag face with heavy Turkmen influence in the pattern, featuring a rectangular central field with octagon and Median star motif in the centre, an “animal tree” in the rectangle and ethnic bird motifs in the corners, with “aina gotchak” guls and animal motifs in alternating colours surrounding the central field, the finishes create three borders with wavy vine and detailed white-ground “syrga” stripes - no comparable pieces are known. The woven end of the closure is torn, as is very often the case with bag faces of a similar age. This is an extraordinary collector’s piece, with wool, knotting and design of the highest quality, to which no photograph can do justice.
