The present work appears to be a preparatory study, and appears to relate to the Portrait Study of a Bearded Man, attributed to Anthony van Dyck by Christopher Brown (with Weiss Gallery, 1998).
Stylistically, the register of this portrait and the dress of the sitter may be compared with the work of van Dyck during his Second Antwerp period (1627-1632). The contemplative pose of the unidentified man was often used by van Dyck for depicting his fellow artists, at the time often aspiring to reassemble the humanist ideal of the Pictor doctus. Similarly, the Royal Collection’s A portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, oil on paper laid down on canvas, circa 1630 (inv. no. 406036), is among other heads that van Dyck painted in this period which are also loosely finished.
In the present picture the artist has used the greyish colour of the ground to achieve the mid-tones, leaving it apparent in areas such as the beard. The vigorous brushwork suggests a freshness and looseness of execution common with the other aforementioned works.
