Germany, c. 1575
God holding dead Christ, study of a detail after "Der Gnadenstuhl" (The Holy Trinity) by Albrecht Dürer (woodcut, 1511), pen and brown ink on laid paper, with water mark "lily in escutcheon) ", inscribed "Joannes Saeng.../ Anno 1654" at lower right, 13,8 x 10 cm, fixed to support, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Collection Heinrich Beckmann, (1874-1940), Bremen (Lugt 2756a); private collection, Germany.
The present study is the copy of a detail copy after Albrecht Dürer‘s woodcut "Der Gnadenstuhl" (The Holy Trinity) of 1511. It may have been executed by a German hand of the socalled Dürerrenaissance around 1575. The inscription at the lower right margin is presumably the later annotation by an owner of the sheet in the 17th century.
