Provenance: Private collection, Germany.
The attribution to Adolph von Menzel was confirmed by Dr. Ursula Riemann-Reyher and Dr. Claude Keisch on the basis of a photograph. The latter compares the drawing with studies for the painting "Schleiferei in der Schmiede zu Hofgastein" (Grindery in the blacksmith’s shop of Hofgastein; 1881, Hamburger Kunsthalle) and particularly with "Piazza d'Erbe in Verona" (1882-1884, Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister). As a consequence the present drawing can be approximately dated to 1881-1884.
